Best mini projector for cookie decorating and tracing

Updated by Tomas Lindgren. A pick, a budget kit and a five-step setup.

The short answer

The Aurzen ZIP: it weighs 0.62 lb, mirrors your phone without Wi-Fi, refocuses itself and stands on its folded body, so a small overhead arm can hold it. Pair it with an overhead stand for under $30. On a tighter plan, the Kodak Luma 150 kit includes an overhead tripod.

What people worry about here

What do I need to trace designs onto cookies?

A small, light projector that mirrors your phone without Wi-Fi, focuses at close range, and can point straight down from an overhead arm. Brightness matters less because the picture is only a few inches wide. Sweetopia's tutorial uses exactly this setup with a pico projector.

0.62 lbAurzen ZIP weight (listing), light enough for a small overhead arm

Can I play videos from my iPhone?

Three ways: AirPlay on Roku-based projectors, casting from apps on Google TV models, or an MFi HDMI adapter into the HDMI port. Plain screen mirroring often blacks out streaming apps because of copy protection.

Does it have a battery, or can I run it from a power bank?

Battery models usually last about 2.5 hours, which covers one movie. USB-C models have no battery but run from a power bank, as long as it delivers 65 W or more over USB-C PD. Phone-sized banks won't start them.

Set it up in five steps

  1. Clamp or weight the overhead stand at the back of the table so the arm reaches over your work area.
  2. Mount the projector pointing straight down, about 1 to 2 feet above the cookie. Higher makes the picture bigger and dimmer.
  3. Mirror your phone (no Wi-Fi needed on the ZIP) and open the design as a plain image with a white background on black.
  4. Zoom the image on your phone until the outline matches the cookie, then lock the phone screen orientation.
  5. Dim the kitchen lights and pipe along the projected lines. Sweetopia's pico projector tutorial uses the same approach.

An adjustable projector stand

PUTORSEN universal stand with 1/4-inch screw

Getting the lens level with the middle of the screen avoids heavy keystone correction, which costs sharpness.

What to look for: A 1/4-inch screw that matches the projector's tripod socket and a tilt lock.

An overhead arm for decorating

Chromlives overhead pico projector stand

Cookie and cake tracing needs the projector pointing straight down at a short distance. A tripod can't do that without tipping.

What to look for: Arm reach past the table edge, a 1/4-inch mount, and a weighted or clamped base.

Questions people ask

What's the best mini projector for cookie decorating?

The Aurzen ZIP: light, self-standing, mirrors a phone without Wi-Fi, and bright enough for a few inches of picture. The best mini projector for cookie decorating on a tight budget is the Kodak Luma 150 kit with its overhead tripod.

How close can a mini projector focus for cookie decorating?

Pocket projectors focus at short distances; the ZIP uses a ToF sensor that refocuses as you move it. Mount it 1 to 2 feet above the table for a cookie-sized picture.

How do I get the template the right size?

Measure the cookie, then zoom the photo on your phone until the projected outline matches. Raising the projector makes the picture bigger; lowering it makes it smaller and brighter.

Do I need Wi-Fi in the kitchen?

Not with the ZIP, which mirrors directly. The Kodak Luma 150 also mirrors over AirPlay and Miracast.

Why is my traced design stretched?

The projector isn't pointing straight down, so the image becomes a trapezoid. Level the arm, or use keystone correction a little.

Should the kitchen lights be on?

Dim them. The projected lines are faint on white royal icing; a dimmer room makes them easy to follow.
